Job description Background
Northamptonshire's households produce more than 300,000 tonnes of waste each year. Raising public awareness of waste and encouraging waste prevention, reuse and recycling is essential if Northamptonshire is to manage waste sustainably in the future.
Educating children about waste prevention and recycling is a high priority for the County Council. If we educate children to recycle in schools, then we may be able to change recycling behaviour at home and encourage adults to recycle as well. This in turn will increase recycling rates.
We are seeking a highly motivated and organised person the join our Waste Education Team to encourage the children and staff in our 330 schools to recycle the waste they produce. Currently approx 95% of schools are recycling, but our target is to get 100% recycling by 2011 which will be more difficult than it sounds because we now have to persuade the schools that, so far, have shown very little interest in recycling.
The current recycling scheme (Slim Your Bin at School) is now 7 years old and has recently been audited to see whether the schools who joined the scheme 7 years ago are still motivated and still recycling. Some schools received new equipment & updated posters and due to staff changes in schools needed to be visited to make sure that the scheme was working correctly. We also updated data from the schools which enabled us to estimate how much they are recycling on average each year. The findings from this extensive audit was recorded in a final report in December 2009.
Slim your Bin at School now needs to be maintained in order to encourage the last few, sometimes reluctant, schools to join the scheme and current schools to continue recycling especially helping them to overcome problems with recycling. The waste education and waste minimisation teams also require help with various smaller waste projects and promotional roadshows for the public across the County on an ongoing basis.
